The 4th annual Detroit Catholic School Heritage Project(Bishop Gallagher Society) Mass and Award Dinner was held on October 22, 2014 at St. Clare of Montefalco. We had a record attendance for the event and the people of the St. Clare parish community made us feel very welcome.
Chief Celebrant of the Mass was Bishop Michael J. Byrnes, Auxilary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit. Bishop Byrnes is a graduate of St. Mary's of Redford grade school and Detroit Catholic Central High School.
The Society added to its Honor Roll two closed Detroit Catholic High Schools-St. Mary's of Redford and Detroit Austin. Austin High School is remembered in a special way at St. Clare of Montefalco with a stained glass window, photo mural and display case of historical items from the school. A touching tribute to a great school.
The keynote speaker for the event was Mick McCabe, an Allen Park Cabrini alum. Mick has done a wonderful job covering high school athletics for the Detroit Free Press.
The Society added 4 members to its Order of St. Bede recognizing career contributions to the heritage of Catholic education in Southeast Michigan. This year's class: Fr. Chris Talbot, Brother Bob Carnaghi, Ms. Jacci Brown and Mr. Tom Kennedy.
St. Bede was a great Catholic educator and Doctor of the Church. He was the patron Saint of a parish and grade school in Southfield. The parish buildings were demolished in 2014 and the church's time capsule has been donated to our Project.
Our thanks to all involved for a wonderful event.
